    Week 3 July 18-22
The readings this week were a great culmination of this course. I think that the ideas that "new media literacies must include the skills, knowledge, ethical frameworks, and self-confidence to deploy these tools toward our own ends" are intriguing (Hobbs & Jensen, 2009). I think that integrating and merging these ideas and concepts is important. I also think the term "new media" is very interesting. What is "new media"? Is it TV? Computers? Web 2.0? There are many questions I wonder about when discussing the ideas of "new media".

I was also very excited to get some resources from the Pungente (2007) article. However, I was disappointed that Canadians have not created a "newer" version of these guides. With the progressive technology turns and the focus towards "21st Century Learning", why have these guides not been re-done or updated?

And finally and maybe more importantly, Marshall McLuhan. I have read this article for several courses and really am amazed by this man and his writings well before much technology, including the Internet, isn't even invented. Today is McLuhan's 100th birthday and I wonder what he would have to say today. The medium is the message is still completely relevant, but I wonder if his opinion would change with things like web 2.0? Or would his message be more engrained than ever?

    Week 2 - July 11-15
Understanding and teaching copyright is very important to students. And I think even more so with the issues of plagiarizing today. Students, with the advent of the Internet and especially with the implementation of Wikipedia in schools, tend to use a great source on computers: copy-paste. By teaching a unit on copyright and explaining that they each have copyrights, the ideas of life+50, and what are transformative or derivative works would help clarify issues for many students (Potter, 2003). I think students are still "pirating" music and movies and not fully understanding the issues. I think I would also incorporate the new "pirating" laws that Canada has introduced into this unit. Perhaps, even having an insource workshop for fellow teachers at school who like to "borrow" content.

    Week 2 - July 11-15
Teaching controversial issues is a very intriguing topic. I thin understanding that you can't really use any resources you want is important. However their is the line between academic freedom and external constraints. Salas (2004) suggets that teachers have authority to decide wha tthey teach, but the best way to "not get fired" is to notify parents and administrators ahead of time. Also, make sure you are well-prepared and have a high quailty unit along with previewing any materials (Salas, 2004). Desipte these types of preparations some districts, schools or parents could still resist or resent what you are teaching (ie. Abbotsford's removal or Social Justice 12). Furthermore, Clarke (1993) suggests ways in which students can evaluate and discuss controversial issues (ie. common strategies for maniuplating arguments such as polarized thinking) in order to address these concerns in classrooms.

Throughout this week I was very intrigued by the choices that districts and schools are making at removing or preventing courses (especially since I teach in Abbotsford). I find it a difficult issue as we are teaching students to question and critically think and express themselves, but teachers are being restricted. The cases that were revealed in Cooper's article 'Bong Hits for Jesus' suggest that each issue is dealt with uniquely. There is some prescendent, but perhaps with our more "liberal" attitude in BC, this is being challenged.
